How to make giant bubble mix
Want bubbles big enough to get lost in? Here’s a simple starter recipe. Mix it the day before for the best results.
✏️ Starter recipe: this is a well-known home recipe to get you going. We’ll swap in our own tried-and-tested mix and tips here.
You’ll need
- 1 litre of warm water (distilled if your tap water is hard)
- ½ teaspoon guar gum
- 1 tablespoon rubbing alcohol (isopropyl), to stop the guar gum clumping
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 50 ml washing-up liquid (plain, no added hand-care extras)
Method
- Mix the guar gum into the rubbing alcohol to make a smooth slurry.
- Stir the slurry into the warm water until it thickens slightly and has no lumps.
- Add the baking powder and stir again.
- Gently stir in the washing-up liquid. Try not to make foam.
- Cover and leave overnight. Give it a gentle stir before use.
Top tips
- Humid days are bubble days. Dry, windy, sunny afternoons pop bubbles fast.
- Move slowly. Open your wand gently and walk backwards to let the bubble grow.
- Skim the foam. Foam on top of the mix kills big bubbles.
- Keep it out of eyes and supervise little ones.
